What would you give for a pie this Friday?

black pie day header

With many of us gearing up for a Black Friday spending spree this Friday, we wanted to turn this event on its head and use it to do something good. That’s why we’ll be giving away frozen surplus pie stock in return for donations to Shelter.

Shelter helps millions of people struggling with bad housing or homelessness every year and Black Pieday is a chance to support the charity and get a pie in return.  We think that’s money-well-spent.

So find your nearest Black Pieday pop-up shop and spend your money wisely, giving to charity in return for delicious pies.   We’ll have award-winning free range British chicken pies, British beef steak pies and vegetarian pies. But get there early because once they’re gone they’re gone.

Our Black Pieday pop-up shops open at 8.30am this Friday 25 November at the following locations:

Broad Quay & Stokes Croft, Bristol

Long Row, Nottingham

Duncan Street, Leeds

Gabriel’s Wharf & Leather Lane, London

The Northern Quarter, Manchester

St Mary’s Street, Cardiff

We also open the same day, at 11am, in:

Trentham, Stoke On Trent

The Covered Market, Oxford

Black Pieday is the inspiration behind another idea of ours called Little Acts of Pieness.  This charitable campaign began in Spring 2016 and we’ve donated 18,000 pies already.

Black Pieday is a #littleactofpieness for Shelter.

Hi, I emailed Romany directly last week following an email thread we had last year. I haven’t had a response so not sure if this was received.
I am currently in the process of arranging our next charity football tournament for Cardiac Risk in the Young in memory of my brother who we sadly lost at the age of 29 to a heart attack. Cardiac Risk in the young are a charity who are working tirelessly to support 14-35 year olds from un-diagnosed heart conditions. As it has been proven that 12 fit and healthy young people die each week in the UK to un-diagnosed heart conditions. I am raising money to support 14-35years by hosting screening days for them to come along for an ECG test to check for any abnormalities as most conditions of no prior warnings or symptoms until its too late. I am more passionate about this since finding out that if my brother was able to receive an ECG test he would still be here with us today. Unfortunately last year I missed the opportunity to get them as I didn’t see you offered this fantastic offer until it was too late. I think I may of done the opposite though this time and given you too much notice haha. The event is on the 13th May 2017 and it would be great if you could donate some pies for me to sell to help me achieve the target (everybody loves a great pie at a football match! hehe) If you require any further information, please do not hesitate to contact me. Thank you.

    Hi there!
I popped into a store last week to ask about the possibility of a donation for a charity raffle am running on the 5th March 2017 in Bristol to raise money and awareness for Amnesty international and your staff directed me to your website,

Amnesty international is an organisation that helps fight abuses of human rights worldwide. The protection of free speech, campaigning against oppressive laws and rights for refugees are just a few of the human rights issues that Amnesty spends their donations on.

I am expecting the majority of raffle tickets to be bought by fellow students as I will be selling them up at the UWE campus and in Bristol city centre’s student accommodation.
A donation of some pies definitely catch the eye of many raffle ticket buyers and would go a long way in helping me to raise a substantial amount of money for a really important cause.

More information about what Amnesty international does can be found on their website (https://www.amnesty.org/en/what-we-do/)
    Charity number:1051681

Absolutely love your pie Moo bought from Borough Market. I find your website rather confusing in that it does not give a full list of your pies only
Gluten free. At the market there were a number of different varieties. I live between Tonbridge and Tunbridge Wells in Kent and would be most grateful if you could let me know where I can purchase your wonderful pies.
I hope to hear from you soon.

    Hello,

We have an Alzheimer’s research group based at the University of Exeter, who are funded by the Alzheimer’s Society. They are going to set up a stall, here at the University, on the 15th June, for Cupcake Day, which is a national event promoted by the Alzheimer’s Society. They are hoping to sell home-made cupcakes, and also donated pies and Pimms – would you be interested in donating some pies for this event?

Look forward to hearing from you. Many thanks.

    Hi there,

My name is Luca Di Paolo and I am Lead Fundraiser for the charity Souprunners. We are a entirely student-led organisation run by University of Nottingham students and twice a week we go into the centre of town and hand-out food and drink to Nottingham’s homeless population.

We would be interested in collaborating with your “Little Acts of Pieness” initiative to perhaps handout some pies within Nottingham?

If this sounds like something you would be interested in please do get into contact!

    Warm regards.

My husband has managed to get a late place running the London Marathon this year. He is running for Crohn’s and Colitis UK as his best friend has Crohn’s and has been very ill with it. We have to raise £2,500 in a very short timescale so we are doing lots of events. We are organising a quiz night for 80 people on Friday 31st March in Cheltenham and would like to know if you are able to help in anyway at all ? Many thanks and look forward to hearing from you. We have a very special event coming up in March about sustainability and would love to be able to secure some veggie pies. Your restaurants still have the little acts of pie-ness flyers so when are you coming back?

    Hi,

I am an Events Management student at Leeds Beckett University and part of a group of students helping to organise a charity fun day in partnership with Live at Leeds to raise money for Martin House charity. Our football fun day, Live at Leeds Extra Time will be held on 1st May and we would love if you were able to donate some pies to feed the football team and the spectators! The day runs from 12pm to 6pm (latest) and we would need food provided from 1pm. Please let me know if this is something you would be interested in providing for us and many of the teams getting involved.

    Kind regards,

    Hi,

I am a librarian for the London Borough of Tower Hamlets, one of the poorest boroughs in London. Despite this, we are proud to say that we have prioritised our library service to the extent that we have ensured that no branches have closed, unlike the massive closures throughout the country.

We provide much-needed services for our community, including a number of regular community groups. These include Prime Time, a group for the over-50s, where people can come and enjoy socialising and a programme of activities, inclding film screnings, talks, trips and other events. Each branch runs their own Prime Time, and the one where I work, at Cubitt Town Library, on the Isle of Dogs, meets every Thursday and attracts an average of around 19 people each week.

I was wondering whether you would consider letting us have some of your delicious pies so that we can organise a free lunch for the group. This would be a much appreciated treat, especially for the senior citizens who are group regulars. We woulld organise this with St John’s Community Centre, an organisation that we have worked with often.

Needless to say, your help would be fully acknowledged in all publicity and we would be happy to publicise your products to those who attend.

Looking forward to hearing from you.

    Kind regards,
    Sotiris Kyriacou

Hi Sam, thanks for getting in touch. We have been giving our Little Acts of Pie-ness pies to all sorts of good causes, which in this context means any event which is not-for-profit. It can be something to raise funds (or simply raise peoples’ spirits!) From street parties to fundraising lunches in the office – we consider them all. Our Little Acts of Pieness is currently closed (we’ve run out of pies!) but we want to open it up again as soon as we can, so watch this space. Oh and also, it’s a nationwide initiative open to anyone who can collect the pies from one of our restaurants.

Thanks again for getting in touch and have a very happy Crustmas!

    Hi Betty
Many thanks for your comment. In actual fact our pies aren’t packaged in foil at all (and we only make individual pies packed directly into a recyclable card box). Also, our award winning pastry tastes a million times better when cooked in the oven as it crisps up so beautifully (a microwave tends to make the pastry a bit soggy and chewy!)

Have a very merry (pie-filled) crustmas!

    Hi Michael

Many thanks for your comment. We’d love to have been in Bournemouth for Black Pieday (or any other day for that matter) but we don’t (yet) have a cafe or restaurant there and for this event, we gave away pies for the charity Shelter outside our cafes and restaurants to keep costs down so that every penny we made could go to the charity.

Thanks though and have a very Merry (pie filled) Crustmas.

Hi Sally, Thanks so much for your inquiry. As you can imagine we get so many requests for different types of pies, for different dietary needs – it just takes a remarkably long time to create new pastries for our pies that we’re happy are as good as our classic recipes.

We’ve just spent the last year creating the perfect Gluten Free pastry as this was the pastry requested the most and we’re very pleased with the result (both pies came top in the British Pie Awards). We do get a few requests for vegan pies (though you’re the first person to have asked for a pie suitable for lactose intolerants) so this is definitely on our ‘to do’ list.

Thank you again for getting in touch and please be assured that your request will be taken into consideration when we plan what to cook up in the pie kitchen next.

    Kindest regards

Hi, I work for a charity supporting unpaid family carers. These carers care for a loved one, most often in their own home. It could be someone caring for their wife with dementia, their child with a disability or a loved one with cancer or other long term illness or disability. These carers receive no financial recompense for this and may have had to give up work or reduce their working hours which can sometimes lead to financial hardship. Unpaid carers save the economy and tax payer a staggering £1.8 billion a year! We are a support, information and advice service with over 10,000 carers on our mailing list, (though there are over 70,000 unpaid carers in Leeds). We also run support groups, training courses, therapy and wellbeing sessions, events and outings to try give unpaid carers a much needed break, research shows a high percentage of carers become unwell due to not taking care of their own physical or mental health and wellbeing. We have started a ‘bat and chat’ group on a Friday where carers can come along have a game of table tennis, meet staff and other carers and have a cuppa, biscuit and hopefully a break and some time out. We heard about your generous pie give away (I’m getting to the point at last :-)) and thought we would like to incorporate a Friday pie day along with our usual bat and chat. We would invite carers to make a monetary donation should they wish which would go into our funds to provide the outings and activities we provide. I’m wondering if you have a special form we need to fill out or if this would suffice as a request? We would be asking for 30 pies for our event, we could lower this and have a smaller event if there is a limit? Thank you for taking the time to read this rather long request (you may have read shorter books :-)). Please feel free to visit our website and see the wonderful work we do . http://www.carersleeds.org.uk/. You may have family carers on your work force that may benefit from our support. Please feel free to pass our info on if you do. Thanks again. Kind Regards. Angie Thompson

Hello, just wondering if there will be another ‘free pies give away’ in the coming months. Im on a new fundraising committee for an animal rescue in Tarleton, Lancashire, called Noah’s Ark Rescue & Sanctuary. They rescue unwanted and abandoned animals, and either re-home where possible or offer sanctuary for the rest of their lives. We had our first ever fundraiser in June, and are now planning a Christmas one for the end of November. Please would you keep us in mind if you do repeat the offer again. We would be looking to sell between 50-100 ‘pie, peas and gravy’ but obviously any amount would be more than appreciated. Many thanks and kind regards. Keep up the good work! Alison, on behalf of Noahs Arks animals.

Usually I’m too busy earning a “crust” to enter competitions but I’m willing to make an exception this time.So I just have to make a comment,no “filling” in any forms, sounds easy enough.”Sweet” competition, something to “savour” if I win. There we are all done in two “shakes”.

I’ve got an awesome Heidi-a, you should send all those goodies to me,
And I’d create the festival experience, in comfort, in front of the TV,
Alas, I’ve no tickets for Glasto, But I’m willing to improvise,

And swig Shakes while munching on Pies!

I should win because “your milkshake brings all the boys to the yard, and they’re like…you’re NOT going to Glastonbury?”
No I’m not, I’m going to wait til Pieday, and instead of living the pie-life at Glasto, I’ll spend my pie-day night playing monopiely eating so many Pieminsters that I can’t moove off the sofa and bend down to pie my shoes.

some pie and shakes would stop all my moans.

    June 22nd, 2013
  228. I need because my milkshake brings all the boys to yard, and they’re like, it’s better with straws. And pies. La la la la la, warm it up. Or eat it cold, the choice is yours, really.

  229. Lynn Tibby

Would love to win some shakes,
to keep my hips a moving,
    And a scrumptious pie too,
Meat and pastry keeps me grooving

    June 22nd, 2013
  230. Deborah Swain

    P-assionate about your pies,
I-n love with this ‘moo’velous shake,
    E-very festival freak knows,
M-usic’s better with pastry, and, steak,
I-t’s like Glasto ‘crusty’ mud, welly’s, ‘n’, wet weather,
N-othing could possibly go better together,
    I-s ‘udder’ly a ‘tent’ing, taste sensation,
    S-uch a ‘crowd pleasing’ creation,
T-o take these, I’d be like the ‘cow who got the cream’,
    E-very ‘rock and roll’ers dream,
R-eally can’t wait….me, milk, meat !..now open that field gate!

    June 22nd, 2013
  231. The Stones may still be Rolling,
    Mumford’s rocking with his Sons,
But getting down with shakes and pies would be my number one!!

    June 22nd, 2013
  232. A milk-tastic prize for the ultimate Pie-rific Moosic Lover! :-)

    June 22nd, 2013
  233. Rachael Chapple

I would please love to win, as my husband and I got married last week and we will be rocking out in the summer nights as man and wife for the first time, and for the first time in ages not on a wedding-diet! We NEED pie and shakes! :D

    June 22nd, 2013
  234. I should win so that when I meat up with my pie-eyed friends we can do whole lot of udderly terrible shaken.

    June 22nd, 2013
  235. Alan C

A prize of 32 Shaken Udder shakes and 12 Pieminister pies is a prize of Pietanic proportions and I’m not really a Free Ranger kind of guy so I will share with my best friends Heidi and also Kate and Sidney. My friends will be so impressed that I will be given a Deerstalker hat and be called the Big Cheese of the gang! We will then dance the Fungi Chicken all night long.

    June 22nd, 2013
  236. Lynthia Doran

My favourite pie’s the Heidi Pie cos veggies aren’t left out,
And when I’m at the festival I’m gonna scream and shout!
I’ll need to keep my strength up so a milkshake I will need,
Shaken Udders Shakes and pies is one fantastic feed!

    June 22nd, 2013
  237. Ant

id love to win for my son who’s the apple of my ‘PIE’
im hoping one day he’ll grow up to be PIEMINISTER of this country!
im not gonna MINCE my words here, im gonna get down to the MEAT AND POTATO of it,
I love PIES, big ones, small ones, doesnt matter bout size!
sometimes I’ll eat too many and get the (milk) SHAKES! but I dont care coz I love shakes!
especially SHAKEN UDDER SHAKES coz they are UDDERLY delicious!
now my plea to win may be a bit CRUSTY, but I do want to SHAKE things up a bit
Festivals are great for MUD PIES, but I love them coz there you can get PIEMINISTER PIES!
maybe they go straight to your thighs, but a word to the wise,
theres nothing so delicious as a PIEMINISTER PIE!
    LOVE LOVE LOVE xx

I have a serious medical condition that is almost the opposite of lactose intolerance. If I don’t drink at least 32 milkshakes I will die!! Can you handle having this on your conscience? As you can imagine drinking that many milkshakes can sometimes leave you feeling a bit ill, I have found eating exactly a dozen pies helps with this. This of course has taken its toll on my weight, my manboobs now look udderly ridiculous!

    June 22nd, 2013
  239. To the stage I shall I take,
With a pie and a shake,
With wellies and a a mac,
I shall complete my snack attack.

Let the tunes be oh so yummy,
Let the milk stick on my face,
As pastry perfection fills my tummy,
I shall find paradise in this place!

    June 22nd, 2013
  240. Janet Kam

I should win because I can steak, rattle and roll to the udderly wonderful top banana acts on my intents camping experience at Glasto, have you seen me shake my booty?

  241. juliette

Shakes and Pies are the perfect combination for this fabulous music generation.

    June 22nd, 2013
  242. Help! Two gert lush little pie rolling, milk shaking, welly stomping, rain and shine loving boys looking for some Pie Ministry to fill their rumbling tums and make them smile… and feed their growing bones, minds and bodies..”Cheers then drive”…

    June 21st, 2013
  243. emma speers

How lucky, 32 delicious milkshakes… you definitely need a few cos after one you will need an udder one and an udder one once you get the taste for it! And after getting pie-eyed at the festival, you’ll need nothing more than a good feel from Pieminster (oi oi now not like that you dirty beggars you!) Once you have indulged I can assure you, your milkshake really will be bringing all the boys to the yard…. Now time to start practicing my own shaking for the festival music :)

  244. I comment when I especially enjoy a post on a blog or if
I have something to valuable to contribute to the discussion.
It’s a result of the sincerness communicated in the article I read. And on this article Feeding The 5000 (well 4,324 actually!) | the pieminister blog. I was actually excited enough to post a commenta response :) I do have 2 questions for you if it’s allright.
Is it only me or does it give the impression like a few of these
remarks appear as if they are written by brain dead folks?
:-P And, if you are writing on other online sites, I would
like to follow you. Would you make a list all of
all your communal pages like your linkedin profile,
    Facebook page or twitter feed?

It would be great to drink a milkshake as The Rolling Stones move past your eyes (pasteurize) before eating your fill in Glastonbury (filling) on enough pies to make you feel a heifer!

    June 20th, 2013
  246. I need to eat at Glastonbury because i dont i get angry and turn into a bit of ‘matador’ – im also going with a few friends so it would be nice to share the pies and drinks and have an ‘udderley’ good time – (maybe I should have thought of a ‘butter’ pun)

  250. It is hard to dispute the fact that car shopping is a stressful, anxiety-ridden task for many
individuals. The sheer size of the expenditure involved and the myriad
of choices on the market make the need for education and information quite critical.
Fortunately, the tips below can make the process far simpler than you may have believed.

  253. […] Instead of making something special for St Paddy’s Day, I have decided to drink a lot of Guinness in honour of our Irish neighbours. However, I did find a brilliant recipe for such an occasion in my brand new copy of Peminister’s ‘a pie for all seasons’ cookbook. The book itself is brilliant, full of interesting and unusual pies, tips and many other useful bits and bobs. I highly recommend this book and the brand as well. Anyway the pie in question looks lovely and heres the recipe courtesy of Pieminister – Posh Paddy’s Pie […]

Your jubilee pie is one of the best things I have ever eaten! It was incredible. I still bring it up in conversations, you have to make this pie part of your range full time. I would love another!

I am disappointed by the name of your latest pie. Notwithstanding his sporting achievements, it also suggests political affiliation and as such is VERY offputting.

JUST TRIED ONE OF YOUR SHAMROCK PIES,THE FILLING WAS TASTY AND THE GRAVY WAS A NICE TOUCH, BUT YOUR PASTRY NEEDS MORE FAT OR LESS HANDLING TO MAKE IT EATABLE,
THE PACKAGING WOULD HAVE BEEN MORE TENDER!
    REGARDS, BIGBRYN.

    Hi

Do you guys know about the ‘cross cultural transforamtion of pastry based snacks. I see Tristan is doing a talk about pies round the world at Papedeli -so I expect that he does. The following comes from my forthcoming novel; Rules of the Road.
    Cheers

    Mike Manson

‘When I go back to University I’ve got an idea for my dissertation,’ Boz continued.
    ‘You’re intending to go back?’
    ‘Yeah.’
‘I thought you were disappointed by the course.’
    ‘It’s better than working.’
    ‘I suppose so.’
‘Anyway, I’m thinking of undertaking some research on the cross cultural transmogrification of pastry-based snacks.’
    ‘Meaning?’
‘The evolution of pies. I might do this for my Social Anthropology dissertation.’
‘Interesting. I didn’t realise there was a Darwinian aspect to baking.’
‘Not Darwinian. This is for the Food and Culture option. What I’m saying is there are international forces influencing the development of pies.’
‘Does that include sweet pastries as well?’
‘Good question Max. Now you mention it, it does. Take, for example, the humble egg tart that is so popular with the Chinese.’
    ‘Is it?’
‘Haven’t you ever had egg tart with dim sum?’
‘Not that I can recall.’ I don’t think I’d ever had dim sum, in fact, I didn’t know what it was.
‘Well, the development of the egg tart can be tracked across the world right back to England. What do they call custard in France? Crème anglaise. The twelfth century crusaders introduced the egg tart to the Portuguese on their way to the Holy Land. The Portuguese then developed it into their own Pastel de Nata. Many centuries later, it was adopted by the Sri Lankans – which in the 17th Century was colonised by Vasco de Gama and his crew – who, being partial to a bit of heat in their food, spiced it up. Which in turn was passed on to the Chinese indentured labourers working on the tea estates. And so it goes on.’
‘Boz, I’m impressed. You know your stuff.’
‘So that’s why I’m keen to go to Albania. I’ve done a little research since you came up with the itinerary and apart from the experience of visiting one of the world’s most totally totalitarian states, I’m interested to sample their food.’
‘Why didn’t you say this before?’
‘I’ve only just figured it out.’
‘Maybe you’re on to something. I doubt anybody else would have come up with such a…’ I was choosing my words carefully here… ‘with such an unusual idea.’
‘Although Albania isn’t known to have one of the great cuisines of the world,’ said Boz, ‘they do have their own version of the pasty. It was introduced by Cornish miners during the Balkan Tin Rush of the 1890s. It’s called bureka; it looks like a traditional pasty but contains fermented cabbage.’

Rob Bell – preacher from the States – loves your pies too! He said (19/4/11) one of the reasons he loves Greenbelt (Christian Arts Festival) is your pie stall – he said something like – ‘there’s a little bit of heaven crashed to earth right there!’ He should know – he’s just published a book on heaven and hell ‘Love Wins’. I think you should export to the USA….
