Introducing Kevin – our first vegan pie

Dec 22 2017

Did someone say vegan pie?

We’ve been making pies for nearly 15 years and every single one of them is famous for its exceptionally good (but undeniably buttery) pastry. So, to create a knock-your-socks-off vegan version has been one of our biggest challenges so far. But after nearly a year of mixing, baking and many a taste test (it’s a tough job but someone has to do it!), we believe we’ve created the most delicious vegan pastry we’ve ever tried. Farewell socks. So this January we’re welcoming Kevin, our first vegan pie, to the menu. Made with British chestnut mushrooms, tomato and red wine with baby onions, red quinoa and thyme, it’s a wholesome, hearty pie that really deserves a try.

Our First Vegan Pie – Kevin

Why Vegan?

We believe that everyone should be able to indulge in a good pie, and having nailed our gluten free and classic pastry, we thought it was high time we created a 100% plant-based recipe. Carrying the trusted Vegan Society trademark, Kevin has all the taste, texture and general deliciousness you’d find in any well-made British pie and is great for vegans and vegetarians looking for a quick dish to tuck into. And as plant-based eating grows in popularity in the UK, we’re hoping that this pie will not only appeal to the growing vegan community but also encourage others to give veganism a go. We think that even the most carnivorous customers might be pleasantly surprised by Kevin.

The Vegan
The Vegan Feast: Kevin, chips, gravy, slaw & minty mushy peas…. Mmmm

Kevin Who?

After spending months creating the pie, it took almost as long to name it and after several office debates and plenty of umming and ahhing, we finally agreed on naming the pie Kevin after Kevin Keegan. Mainly because it’s a nod to the proper East End pie tradition through a bit of Cockney rhyming slang but also because we’ve always loved silly pie names and we thought Heidi was getting a little lonely.

When can we try Kevin?

To coincide with Veganuary, Kevin will be available in all 13 of our restaurants and cafés from 2nd January 2018. You’ll also be able to buy Kevin from selected Waitrose branches and online through Ocado and our online gift shop. We have a few tricks up our sleeve for the launch; so if you haven’t already – be sure to join our V.I.Pie Club. As well as Kevin, we’ve also got our Roots Manoova – a vegan and gluten free skillet of roast root vegetables, quinoa and red wine with a crisp potato top on the menu along with a cracking selection of vegan sides to enjoy it with (don’t say we don’t treat you).

    Hello Hannah,

Pieminister’s first pies were cooked at home by founders and brothers-in-law Jon Simon and Tristan Hogg. They still create the pie recipes we make today and these still reflect their personal cooking styles, which often involves adding a dash of wine or beer. This is to get the depth of flavour they’re looking for, without the use of additives, for example.
We do currently have two pies in our range that are alcohol-free – the Saag Pie-neer and Heidi pie. These are on our restaurant and café menus, available online and through selected retailer. And we have made an official note of your request – if we can get the delicious taste we’re after when developing new pies without adding alcohol, we will!

Hi Steph, yes the free Hurrikane’s are still available this morning – if the match goes into extra time, so do we! It is first come, first served so be quick!

Are the Hurrikane pies still available today seeming you closed before the game finished yesterday?

Hi there, it’s a great question, and palm oil is a really important issue we’re working to tackle at Pieminister. We are currently working with our UK supplier to trace the palm oil we do use to ensure it is fully sustainable, however, we are also exploring alternative oils that we could use instead. Something we are mindful of is that switching to another product could contribute to a surge in demand for an alternative product, which in turn could create issues within another oil industry. It’s a difficult but important issue and we’re doing everything we can to keep both our pies, our customers and the environment as happy as can be. Hope that helps? Thanks, The Pie Crew.

Hi Lizzie, there’s hundreds of free pies available when Harry Kane scores a goal, or if the Captain isn’t on the pitch, if England wins. The free pies are first come, first served so keep an eye on our social media channels and head to your nearest Pieminister quickly after our announcements! We reckon they’ll keep the wins coming for the pies alone…

Hi Karen, to get your hands on Pieminister pies in Sheffield, you can head to our restaurants on Division Street – otherwise, we’re stocked in many Waitrose stores or online from Ocado. Hope that helps!

Hi Nicky, so sorry we must have missed your comment on Twitter. The Hurrikane pie is our pie launched to celebrate the World Cup, and is named after England Captain Harry Kane, which is why that pie is linked to the celebration. There will be lots of promotions coming up which are suitable for vegetarians and also a new vegan pie is on the way. We’re sorry that you might be missing out this time, but there’s lots of exciting things to come.

Why are you still using palm oil? Corruption is rife within RSPO. I dont wish to support destruction

You ignored me when I asked on Twitter, but is there an alternative for vegetarians?

Hi Pam, we’re always trying to expand our range and this is something we’re looking into. In the meantime, we do have our Gluten Free Heidi Pie – spinach, sweet potato and goats cheese – which is approved by the Vegetarian Society. Thanks!

    May 15th, 2018
  22. Pieminister

Hi there, thanks for flagging this. We completely agree and we’re always willing to learn. Our gf pies are Coeliac UK approved, so are suitable for all those who don’t eat gluten for various reasons. That said, we’ve amended the post to make it clearer.

Hi Aarti, we do have a couple of gluten-free options for kids: Little Fishy dishy and the Sausage and mash. We do serve a gluten-free Peroni in all of our restaurants and the majority of cafes – hopefully that helps if you’re looking for options next time. Thanks!

    May 15th, 2018
  24. Aarti

    Hi,

You need to add some gluten free option in the kids menu.

Also how about adding some gluten free beers in the main drinks menu.

    Thanks

  25. A Coeliac

Coeliac disease is not an “intolerance”, it’s an auto-immune disease. This reiterates a common misconception, underplaying the condition. Please correct in your website summary here…

Please make a GF version of your Kevin vegan pie – or else some other non-meat GF pie.

Your next gluten-free pie should be the wild mushroom one – I really miss being able to eat that one. Or the fungi chicken which I’ve never tried.

    May 14th, 2018
  29. Jonathan Davies

    Hi,
My husband and I regularly buy your gf ranger and Moo pies when we place our Ocado shop.
They are definitely the best pies on the market – streets ahead of any competition!

Couple of suggestions for a new variety? Chicken and mushroom, minced beef and onion, chicken curry, vegetable curry to name but a few!

One thing we both miss in the way of pastry covered savoury products is a good Sausage Roll. M&S have one that is not too bad but if someone could perfect a gf flaky or puff pastry then that company must bring out a sausage roll! Please! :)

Anyway, please don’t stop the current lines, just add to them!

Thanks for the great pies though – two customers for life here!!

Kevin looks amazing and really tasty. Well done on making a pie for vegans.
I am intolerant of onions though, so I can’t partake of his deliciousness. I don’t suppose you’d consider making onion/leek/shallot-free versions?
All the best with Kevin. I’m sure he has a bright future ahead of him.

Hi there Clive and thank you for getting in touch. Kevin is already available for home delivery on our own online shop (https://www.pieminister.co.uk/shop/category/pies/) and it will also be available through Ocado by next week.
The Roots Manoova is slightly more difficult as we cook it in cast iron skillets so it’s only available in our restaurants at present. We hope to have another vegan pie for you soon though, which will be online too.
Hope this helps. All the best from Pieminister.

Hi Sam, thanks for getting in touch. We have been giving our Little Acts of Pie-ness pies to all sorts of good causes, which in this context means any event which is not-for-profit. It can be something to raise funds (or simply raise peoples’ spirits!) From street parties to fundraising lunches in the office – we consider them all. Our Little Acts of Pieness is currently closed (we’ve run out of pies!) but we want to open it up again as soon as we can, so watch this space. Oh and also, it’s a nationwide initiative open to anyone who can collect the pies from one of our restaurants.

Thanks again for getting in touch and have a very happy Crustmas!

Romany and the team at Pieminister.

  153. Sam Walker

Please let me know how a project could meet your criteria of ‘a good cause’ and if there is a limited geographical area it needs to be in? i.e. only in Bristol? Great ‘pie’dea, thank you.

    Hi Betty
Many thanks for your comment. In actual fact our pies aren’t packaged in foil at all (and we only make individual pies packed directly into a recyclable card box). Also, our award winning pastry tastes a million times better when cooked in the oven as it crisps up so beautifully (a microwave tends to make the pastry a bit soggy and chewy!)

Have a very merry (pie-filled) crustmas!

    Hi Michael

Many thanks for your comment. We’d love to have been in Bournemouth for Black Pieday (or any other day for that matter) but we don’t (yet) have a cafe or restaurant there and for this event, we gave away pies for the charity Shelter outside our cafes and restaurants to keep costs down so that every penny we made could go to the charity.

Thanks though and have a very Merry (pie filled) Crustmas.

Good for you guys – A brilliant idea and so nice to hear that some people think to give rather than take. It may be an American tradition, thanksgiving, however if we can adopt Halloween from the US why not the idea of giving thanks or maybe just the giving part !! xxx

suggestion: That you package your pies for stores in containers that can be microwaved rather than in foil pans. They are great – but makes no sense to heat a whole over for a mini pie.

Hi, I work for a charity supporting unpaid family carers. These carers care for a loved one, most often in their own home. It could be someone caring for their wife with dementia, their child with a disability or a loved one with cancer or other long term illness or disability. These carers receive no financial recompense for this and may have had to give up work or reduce their working hours which can sometimes lead to financial hardship. Unpaid carers save the economy and tax payer a staggering £1.8 billion a year! We are a support, information and advice service with over 10,000 carers on our mailing list, (though there are over 70,000 unpaid carers in Leeds). We also run support groups, training courses, therapy and wellbeing sessions, events and outings to try give unpaid carers a much needed break, research shows a high percentage of carers become unwell due to not taking care of their own physical or mental health and wellbeing. We have started a ‘bat and chat’ group on a Friday where carers can come along have a game of table tennis, meet staff and other carers and have a cuppa, biscuit and hopefully a break and some time out. We heard about your generous pie give away (I’m getting to the point at last :-)) and thought we would like to incorporate a Friday pie day along with our usual bat and chat. We would invite carers to make a monetary donation should they wish which would go into our funds to provide the outings and activities we provide. I’m wondering if you have a special form we need to fill out or if this would suffice as a request? We would be asking for 30 pies for our event, we could lower this and have a smaller event if there is a limit? Thank you for taking the time to read this rather long request (you may have read shorter books :-)). Please feel free to visit our website and see the wonderful work we do . http://www.carersleeds.org.uk/. You may have family carers on your work force that may benefit from our support. Please feel free to pass our info on if you do. Thanks again. Kind Regards. Angie Thompson

    Hi there,

We have got married and moved house in the last 2 months and now our new street is hosting it’s very first street party this October.

I was wondering if you may still be providing community events with some of your delicious pies?!

I think we’d be a real hit with the street if we could pull this one off!

    Thanks so much,

Hello, just wondering if there will be another ‘free pies give away’ in the coming months. Im on a new fundraising committee for an animal rescue in Tarleton, Lancashire, called Noah’s Ark Rescue & Sanctuary. They rescue unwanted and abandoned animals, and either re-home where possible or offer sanctuary for the rest of their lives. We had our first ever fundraiser in June, and are now planning a Christmas one for the end of November. Please would you keep us in mind if you do repeat the offer again. We would be looking to sell between 50-100 ‘pie, peas and gravy’ but obviously any amount would be more than appreciated. Many thanks and kind regards. Keep up the good work! Alison, on behalf of Noahs Arks animals.

Usually I’m too busy earning a “crust” to enter competitions but I’m willing to make an exception this time.So I just have to make a comment,no “filling” in any forms, sounds easy enough.”Sweet” competition, something to “savour” if I win. There we are all done in two “shakes”.

Pork Pies in front of my eyes
    Sitting under Glastonbury Skies
Udderly Shaken with those Rolling Stone Guys
Well Worthy of A Trip to the Farm
I’d fill up my tent with lots of Supplies.

I would love to win because if all those milkshakes bring the boys to my yard then I would love to see what the pies bring !!

    June 23rd, 2013
  322. Ellie S

I’ve got an awesome Heidi-a, you should send all those goodies to me,
And I’d create the festival experience, in comfort, in front of the TV,
Alas, I’ve no tickets for Glasto, But I’m willing to improvise,
I’d pitch a tent in the lounge, get on down with The Stones,
And swig Shakes while munching on Pies!

    June 23rd, 2013
  323. Rachael

I should win because “your milkshake brings all the boys to the yard, and they’re like…you’re NOT going to Glastonbury?”
No I’m not, I’m going to wait til Pieday, and instead of living the pie-life at Glasto, I’ll spend my pie-day night playing monopiely eating so many Pieminsters that I can’t moove off the sofa and bend down to pie my shoes.
It’s be an udder sur-pies to win this yummy prize. (And if I did I’d get pie-eyed)

    June 23rd, 2013
  324. Rachel

I pie with my little eye,
    Something beginning with p,

I like my milk shaken not stirred,
anything other than Pieminster would be absurd.
The perfect combo of pie and milkshakes
gives me non stop, uncontrollable quakes.
I’ve missed Glasto, not seen the Stones,
some pie and shakes would stop all my moans.

    June 22nd, 2013
  327. I need because my milkshake brings all the boys to yard, and they’re like, it’s better with straws. And pies. La la la la la, warm it up. Or eat it cold, the choice is yours, really.

  328. Lynn Tibby

Would love to win some shakes,
to keep my hips a moving,
    And a scrumptious pie too,
Meat and pastry keeps me grooving

    June 22nd, 2013
  329. Deborah Swain

    P-assionate about your pies,
I-n love with this ‘moo’velous shake,
    E-very festival freak knows,
M-usic’s better with pastry, and, steak,
I-t’s like Glasto ‘crusty’ mud, welly’s, ‘n’, wet weather,
N-othing could possibly go better together,
    I-s ‘udder’ly a ‘tent’ing, taste sensation,
    S-uch a ‘crowd pleasing’ creation,
T-o take these, I’d be like the ‘cow who got the cream’,
    E-very ‘rock and roll’ers dream,
R-eally can’t wait….me, milk, meat !..now open that field gate!

    June 22nd, 2013
  330. The Stones may still be Rolling,
    Mumford’s rocking with his Sons,
But getting down with shakes and pies would be my number one!!

    June 22nd, 2013
  333. I should win so that when I meat up with my pie-eyed friends we can do whole lot of udderly terrible shaken.

    June 22nd, 2013
  334. Alan C

A prize of 32 Shaken Udder shakes and 12 Pieminister pies is a prize of Pietanic proportions and I’m not really a Free Ranger kind of guy so I will share with my best friends Heidi and also Kate and Sidney. My friends will be so impressed that I will be given a Deerstalker hat and be called the Big Cheese of the gang! We will then dance the Fungi Chicken all night long.

    June 22nd, 2013
  335. Lynthia Doran

My favourite pie’s the Heidi Pie cos veggies aren’t left out,
And when I’m at the festival I’m gonna scream and shout!
I’ll need to keep my strength up so a milkshake I will need,
Shaken Udders Shakes and pies is one fantastic feed!

    June 22nd, 2013
  336. Ant

I have a serious medical condition that is almost the opposite of lactose intolerance. If I don’t drink at least 32 milkshakes I will die!! Can you handle having this on your conscience? As you can imagine drinking that many milkshakes can sometimes leave you feeling a bit ill, I have found eating exactly a dozen pies helps with this. This of course has taken its toll on my weight, my manboobs now look udderly ridiculous!

    June 22nd, 2013
  338. To the stage I shall I take,
With a pie and a shake,
With wellies and a a mac,
I shall complete my snack attack.

Let the tunes be oh so yummy,
Let the milk stick on my face,
As pastry perfection fills my tummy,
I shall find paradise in this place!

How lucky, 32 delicious milkshakes… you definitely need a few cos after one you will need an udder one and an udder one once you get the taste for it! And after getting pie-eyed at the festival, you’ll need nothing more than a good feel from Pieminster (oi oi now not like that you dirty beggars you!) Once you have indulged I can assure you, your milkshake really will be bringing all the boys to the yard…. Now time to start practicing my own shaking for the festival music :)

Is it only me or does it give the impression like a few of these

  345. I need to eat at Glastonbury because i dont i get angry and turn into a bit of ‘matador’ – im also going with a few friends so it would be nice to share the pies and drinks and have an ‘udderley’ good time – (maybe I should have thought of a ‘butter’ pun)

However, I did find a brilliant recipe for such an occasion in my brand new copy of Peminister’s ‘a pie for all seasons’ cookbook. The book itself is brilliant, full of interesting and unusual pies, tips and many other useful bits and bobs. I highly recommend this book and the brand as well. Had one of the pietanic pies for the first time today-omigod, it sorted our bedridden-cold bad moods out a treat! Noticed the tokens on the side-cant wait to see what can be done with them! Will DEFINITELY be stock-piling the pietanic for all rainy/poorly days-ultimate conforter!

    Keep up the great work!

    Hi

Do you guys know about the ‘cross cultural transforamtion of pastry based snacks. I see Tristan is doing a talk about pies round the world at Papedeli -so I expect that he does. The following comes from my forthcoming novel; Rules of the Road.
    Cheers

    Mike Manson

‘When I go back to University I’ve got an idea for my dissertation,’ Boz continued.
    ‘You’re intending to go back?’
    ‘Yeah.’
‘I thought you were disappointed by the course.’
    ‘It’s better than working.’
    ‘I suppose so.’
‘Anyway, I’m thinking of undertaking some research on the cross cultural transmogrification of pastry-based snacks.’
    ‘Meaning?’
‘The evolution of pies. I might do this for my Social Anthropology dissertation.’
‘Interesting. I didn’t realise there was a Darwinian aspect to baking.’
‘Not Darwinian. This is for the Food and Culture option. What I’m saying is there are international forces influencing the development of pies.’
‘Does that include sweet pastries as well?’
‘Good question Max. Now you mention it, it does. Take, for example, the humble egg tart that is so popular with the Chinese.’
    ‘Is it?’
‘Haven’t you ever had egg tart with dim sum?’
‘Not that I can recall.’ I don’t think I’d ever had dim sum, in fact, I didn’t know what it was.
‘Well, the development of the egg tart can be tracked across the world right back to England. What do they call custard in France? Crème anglaise. The twelfth century crusaders introduced the egg tart to the Portuguese on their way to the Holy Land. The Portuguese then developed it into their own Pastel de Nata. Many centuries later, it was adopted by the Sri Lankans – which in the 17th Century was colonised by Vasco de Gama and his crew – who, being partial to a bit of heat in their food, spiced it up. Which in turn was passed on to the Chinese indentured labourers working on the tea estates. And so it goes on.’
‘Boz, I’m impressed. You know your stuff.’
‘So that’s why I’m keen to go to Albania. I’ve done a little research since you came up with the itinerary and apart from the experience of visiting one of the world’s most totally totalitarian states, I’m interested to sample their food.’
‘Why didn’t you say this before?’
‘I’ve only just figured it out.’
‘Maybe you’re on to something. I doubt anybody else would have come up with such a…’ I was choosing my words carefully here… ‘with such an unusual idea.’
‘Although Albania isn’t known to have one of the great cuisines of the world,’ said Boz, ‘they do have their own version of the pasty. It was introduced by Cornish miners during the Balkan Tin Rush of the 1890s. It’s called bureka; it looks like a traditional pasty but contains fermented cabbage.’

Rob Bell – preacher from the States – loves your pies too! He said (19/4/11) one of the reasons he loves Greenbelt (Christian Arts Festival) is your pie stall – he said something like – ‘there’s a little bit of heaven crashed to earth right there!’ He should know – he’s just published a book on heaven and hell ‘Love Wins’. I think you should export to the USA….
